Why the Horizen L3 Is Shutting Down<\/h2>\n

The Horizen L3 runs as an OP Stack chain that settles to Base. Base's Denim upgrade moves Base to 200-millisecond blocks and activates on Base mainnet on November 5, 2026 at 18:00 UTC. Horizen says the upgrade breaks compatibility with OP Stack L3 chains: about 40 minutes after activation, the Horizen L3 can no longer include user transactions.<\/p>\n

Rather than patch around the change, Horizen is retiring the L3 and making Base the home chain for the ecosystem.<\/p>\n

The Shutdown Timeline<\/h2>\n

Bridging from the L3 to Base closes on November 4, 2026 at 13:00 UTC, when balances are snapshotted. Stargate and the native bridge at bridge.horizen.io are the two routes out of the L3 before that deadline. Horizen ended L3 staking rewards on October 25, 2026. Horizen (ZEN)<\/a> and USDC.e can be bridged to Base through Stargate, and ETH moves through the native bridge at bridge.horizen.io.<\/p>\n

Tokens left behind are handled in two ways. ZEN or ETH still on the L3 after the shutdown will be returned on Base by the Horizen DAO over several weeks. USDC.e is not covered by that return process.<\/p>\n

What Replaces the Horizen L3<\/h2>\n

Base becomes the home chain for the Horizen ecosystem. Horizen plans to run its Vela confidential execution environment and a new ZEN staking program there. ZEN remains one of the well-known privacy coins<\/a>, and the move continues its shift from a standalone chain to an ecosystem on the Base ecosystem<\/a>.<\/p>\n
