How the Terra Classic Blockchain Works

Terra was created by Terraform Labs. It was designed around algorithmic stablecoins. UST was meant to stay at one dollar through a swap system with LUNA. In May 2022, UST lost its dollar peg and LUNA's price collapsed. A new chain called Terra was then launched with a new LUNA coin. The original chain kept running as Terra Classic, with LUNC and USTC. Since then, the community and validators have run the chain. Validators secure it with Proof of Stake, and LUNC holders can stake and vote.

Types of Tokens on Terra Classic

  • Native coin: LUNC pays fees and is used for staking and governance.
  • Stablecoin: USTC, which no longer holds its one-dollar peg.
  • Old DeFi tokens: Tokens from the original Terra apps, such as MIR (Mirror Protocol).
  • Bridged tokens: LINK, UNI, DAI, WBNB, WBTC and SOL were bridged to Terra through Wormhole and other bridges. They appear on this list because a version of them exists on Terra Classic.
  • Community tokens: Small tokens and meme coins made by the Terra Classic community.
