CoinGecko API Alternatives in 2026: Which One Fixes Your Problem?

Short answer: The right CoinGecko API alternative depends on what is holding you back. For lower cost at scale, Coinranking gives 2 million requests for $99 a month, against $499 on CoinGecko. For production streaming, Coinranking offers WebSocket and SSE where incoming messages don’t use up your quota. For raw exchange data, CoinAPI is a strong option.

Disclosure: This guide is published by Coinranking, and our API is one of the options. Prices and terms come from each provider’s own pages, checked on October 24, 2026.

CoinGecko is a popular place to start. Most teams look elsewhere for one specific reason. Find yours below.

Problem 1: “We need more calls, but the next plan is too expensive”

CoinGecko’s plans jump in price as volume grows:

CoinGecko planPrice per monthCredits per month
DemoFree10,000
Basic$35100,000
Analyst$129500,000
Lite$4992,000,000
Pro$9995,000,000 or more

What to use instead: the Coinranking API. Its plans grow in smaller steps:

Coinranking planPrice per monthRequests per month
Free$010,000
Basic$24500,000
Startup$491,000,000
Growth$992,000,000
Professional$1995,000,000

For 2 million calls you pay $99 instead of $499. For 5 million you pay $199 instead of $999. Our full crypto API pricing comparison covers more providers.

Problem 2: “We can’t show a CoinGecko credit on every screen”

CoinGecko requires “Data provided by CoinGecko” with a link on every plan, paid plans included. That can clash with white-label products and client apps.

What to check: most data providers ask for some form of credit, including Coinranking. Read the terms before you choose:

  • Coinranking: you must show that the data comes from Coinranking.
  • CoinPaprika: “Powered by CoinPaprika” on every plan.
  • LiveCoinWatch: a link back on every page that shows its data.
  • CoinMarketCap: no attribution rule is stated on its pricing page.

If you need no credit line at all, ask about an enterprise licence.

Problem 3: “Our WebSocket feed is in beta, and messages eat our credits”

CoinGecko’s WebSocket starts on the $35 Basic plan, which is a low entry price. But it is in beta and outside the service level agreement. Each response costs 0.1 credit, and large caps update about every 10 seconds.

What to use instead: Coinranking’s streaming, on the Professional plan ($199).

  • Choose WebSocket or SSE. Both send the same messages.
  • Set updates every 1, 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds.
  • Opening a stream counts as one request. Messages you receive are free.

Problem 4: “We need history beyond 2 years without paying $129”

CoinGecko’s Basic plan includes 2 years of history. Longer daily history starts at the $129 Analyst plan.

What to use instead: Coinranking includes full price history back to 2010 from its $49 Startup plan. OHLCV candles, futures and technical indicators start at the $99 Growth plan.

Problem 5: “We need raw exchange data, such as trades and order books”

CoinGecko is an aggregator. It is built for prices across many markets, not tick-level exchange data.

What to use instead: CoinAPI focuses on exchange-level data from 400+ exchanges, by its own count. Plans start at $79 a month, with WebSocket on every plan. Its usage-based pricing takes more planning.

For a single exchange’s own markets, Binance and Coinbase offer free public WebSocket feeds.

Problem 6: “We want CoinGecko’s coverage on another big brand”

What to use instead: CoinMarketCap is the other large aggregator. Its free plan has 15,000 credits a month, and 2 million credits cost $299. Data updates every 60 seconds on the two cheapest plans.

If you’re weighing CoinMarketCap too, see our CoinMarketCap API alternatives.

How to move off CoinGecko safely

  1. Map coin IDs once. Each API uses its own IDs. Build a lookup table for the coins you use.
  2. Run both APIs in parallel. Compare prices for a few days before you switch.
  3. Cache what doesn’t change. Coin names, logos and descriptions rarely change. Fetch them once a day.
  4. Replace polling with streaming for live prices. It cuts your call count sharply. See REST vs WebSocket.
