Layer 2 coins are tokens of networks built on top of a main blockchain, called a layer 1. A layer 2 handles transactions off the main chain, then sends a summary back to it. How Layer 2 Networks Work
A layer 2 collects many transactions and processes them on its own network. It then bundles them and posts the result to the layer 1. This bundle is called a rollup. Because many transactions share one entry on the main chain, each user pays a smaller fee.
Types of Layer 2s
- Optimistic rollups: They assume transactions are valid unless someone proves fraud. Arbitrum and Optimism use this model.
- ZK rollups: They use zero-knowledge proofs to show every batch is correct. StarkNet and zkSync use this model. See the zero-knowledge list.
- Other designs: Some projects use sidechains or their own validators. They are often grouped with layer 2s, even though they work differently.
Layer 1 vs Layer 2
A layer 1 is the base blockchain, like Ethereum, Bitcoin or Solana. It settles transactions and keeps the final record. A layer 2 is built on top to scale it. Some networks go further and build a layer 3 on top of a layer 2.
Risks
Many layer 2s are young and still change their design. Some rely on a small group or a single operator to order transactions. Bridges that move funds between layers can be targets for hacks. L2 tokens can also fall in value even when the network itself grows.
