How the Avalanche Blockchain Works

Avalanche has a Primary Network with three chains. The X-Chain handles transfers of assets. The P-Chain manages validators and Avalanche L1s. The C-Chain runs smart contracts and works like Ethereum. Most tokens on this list live on the C-Chain. Validators stake AVAX and reach agreement by repeatedly sampling each other, which gives fast finality. Projects can also launch their own Avalanche L1 chains. Fees on the C-Chain are paid in AVAX.

  • Native coin: AVAX pays for fees and is used for staking.
  • Stablecoins: Tokens like USDT, USDC and DAI that aim to stay close to one US dollar.
  • DeFi tokens: Tokens of exchanges and lending apps, such as JOE, QI, AAVE and CRV.
  • Liquid staking tokens: Tokens that represent staked AVAX or staked assets.
  • Meme coins: Community tokens launched on the C-Chain.
  • Bridged and wrapped tokens: Tokens like WETH, WBTC and LINK. They appear on this list because versions of them also exist on Avalanche.

How to Buy Avalanche Tokens

  1. Use a wallet that supports the Avalanche C-Chain, such as most Ethereum wallets.
  2. Get some AVAX on the C-Chain for gas fees.
