Introduction

BasedAI is a decentralized peer-to-peer network designed to bring privacy-preserving artificial intelligence to the blockchain. Built on Ethereum and developed by Based Labs, it integrates AI large language models (LLMs) with advanced cryptographic techniques to ensure that data remains fully encrypted — even during computation.

At its core, basedAI aims to democratize access to AI by removing single points of control and distributing both ownership and computation across its network participants.

History & Background

BasedAI was developed by Based Labs in close collaboration with the founding team behind Pepecoin, an Ethereum-based token that plays a central role in the ecosystem. The project published its technical whitepaper in early 2024, with the architecture peer-reviewed and hosted on arXiv. The network progressed through two testnets — Prometheus and Cyan — before advancing toward its mainnet launch.

The project draws architectural inspiration from Polkadot Substrate, Bittensor's Yuma Consensus, and GPU-focused infrastructure similar to RNDR.

How basedAI Works

The network is organized around Brains — specialized AI subnets, capped at a maximum of 1,024. Each Brain hosts a specific AI model and is managed by its owner. Miners and validators contribute computational resources (preferably GPUs) to run models and verify outputs, earning $BASED token rewards in return.

The flagship privacy feature is Cerberus Squeezing, a proprietary quantization process that transforms standard LLMs into ZK-LLMs (Zero-Knowledge Large Language Models) using Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). This means user queries and AI responses remain encrypted throughout the entire computation — never exposed in plaintext.

BasedAI is also EVM-compatible, supporting DeFi applications such as liquidity markets, token swaps, and smart contracts natively within its ecosystem.

Tokenomics

The $BASED token is the native reward and utility asset of the network. It is distributed as emissions to Brain owners, miners, and validators based on their performance and contribution level. Reward emissions from each Brain are split: a portion goes to the Brain owner, while the majority is shared among miners and validators.

Pepecoin serves as the gateway currency for acquiring Brains — either by burning it in exchange for Brain Credits (ERC-20 tokens) or by staking a large amount for a fixed period. This burn mechanism introduces a deflationary dynamic to Pepecoin's supply. Brain Credits can also be pooled collectively, enabling shared ownership of a single Brain and forming Brain DAOs with community governance rights.

Ecosystem & Use Cases

  • Privacy-preserving AI inference: Users can interact with LLMs without exposing their queries.
  • Decentralized AI ownership: Brain Credits and Brain NFTs allow individuals and groups to co-own AI subnets.
  • DeFi integration: EVM compatibility enables liquidity pools, swaps, and on-chain financial tooling.
  • Governance: Brains holding at least 0.5% of the total network stake achieve GigaBrain status, granting them voting rights on network-critical decisions.

Team, Governance & Community

BasedAI was built by Based Labs, whose leadership team has roots in the Pepecoin project. In the network's early phase, Based Labs retains a significant governance role, with proposals passing by default unless voted down by a majority of GigaBrain holders. Over time, governance is designed to transition toward a more fully decentralized model driven by Brain owners and the broader community.

The project is open to community participation through staking, Brain ownership, mining, and validation.

Advantages

  • Privacy by design: FHE-powered Cerberus Squeezing keeps AI queries and responses encrypted end-to-end.
  • Decentralized AI ownership: Brain Credits allow fractional, community-driven ownership of AI subnets.
  • EVM compatibility: Developers can deploy DeFi apps and smart contracts natively.
  • Incentive alignment: Miners, validators, and Brain owners are all rewarded based on performance.
  • Peer-reviewed architecture: Technical foundations published on arXiv for public scrutiny.

Risks & Challenges

  • Complexity: The layered architecture — combining FHE, LLMs, ERC-721 Brains, and ERC-20 emissions — creates significant technical risk.
  • GPU dependency: Network performance depends heavily on the availability and willingness of GPU contributors.
  • Pepecoin coupling: Tight integration with Pepecoin means the ecosystem is exposed to that token's market dynamics.
  • Regulatory uncertainty: Decentralized AI platforms face evolving and unclear regulatory frameworks globally.
  • Early-stage governance: Based Labs retains outsized governance influence in the initial network phase.

Long-Term Vision

BasedAI envisions a future where AI development is open, private, and community-owned — a direct counterpoint to centralized AI platforms controlled by a handful of corporations. By embedding privacy as a default through ZK-LLMs and distributing both computational ownership and economic rewards across its network, the project aims to establish a sustainable, censorship-resistant infrastructure for the next generation of AI applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Brain is a specialized AI subnet that hosts a specific large language model on the basedAI network. There can be a maximum of 1,024 Brains, and each is represented as an ERC-721 NFT on Ethereum.

Brains can be acquired using Pepecoin in two ways: by burning Pepecoin to receive Brain Credits (which are then redeemed for a Brain), or by staking a large amount of Pepecoin for a fixed period. Brain Credits can also be pooled with others for collective ownership.

Cerberus Squeezing is basedAI's proprietary encryption mechanism that transforms standard LLMs into Zero-Knowledge LLMs (ZK-LLMs) using Fully Homomorphic Encryption. It ensures that user queries and AI responses remain encrypted throughout the entire computation process.

$BASED is the native reward token distributed to Brain owners, miners, and validators based on their performance and contribution to the network. It is also used to incentivize the delegation of computational resources within each Brain.

Brain Credits are ERC-20 tokens obtained by burning Pepecoin. They are the primary mechanism for acquiring Brains, and owning a percentage of a Brain's Credits entitles the holder to that same percentage of the Brain's $BASED emissions.

A GigaBrain is a Brain that has accumulated at least 0.5% of the total network stake. GigaBrains are granted one vote each on network-critical governance decisions, forming the basis of basedAI's decentralized governance system.

BasedAI was developed by Based Labs, in collaboration with the founding team of Pepecoin. The project's technical architecture was detailed in a whitepaper published on arXiv in early 2024.

Yes. BasedAI has an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compiler built in, which means DeFi applications supported by the EVM — such as liquidity markets, token swaps, and smart contracts — are also supported within the basedAI ecosystem.
