Introduction

Origin Dollar Governance (OGV) is the dedicated governance and value-accrual token for two of Origin Protocol's flagship DeFi products: Origin Dollar (OUSD) and Origin Ether (OETH). It gives holders a direct say in how these yield-bearing assets operate, while also letting them earn a share of protocol revenue.

OGV sits at the center of a decentralized decision-making system where community members — not a central authority — determine the direction of the protocol.

History & Background

Origin Protocol launched the OGV token in 2022 as a way to separate governance of its DeFi products from its original token, OGN. The contract was deployed on Ethereum in March 2022, and the Token Generation Event (TGE) took place on July 12, 2022.

Initial distribution involved an airdrop to OGN holders on a 1:1 basis, with a snapshot taken in July 2022. In April 2024, both the OGN and OGV communities voted in favor of merging the two tokens, with OGV holders able to migrate their tokens to OGN at a fixed exchange rate.

How Origin Dollar Governance Works

Holders stake OGV to receive veOGV — vote-escrowed OGV — which grants governance rights and a share of protocol fees. The longer a holder stakes, the more veOGV they receive, amplifying both voting power and economic rewards.

The veOGV model uses exponential decay rather than the linear decay pioneered by Curve Finance's veCRV, reducing smart contract complexity and enabling features like vote delegation while keeping gas costs low.

Governance proposals follow a GovernorBravo-compatible framework, meaning community votes can influence which DeFi strategies OUSD and OETH use to generate yield.

Tokenomics

OGV is designed around a stake-to-earn model. Stakers receive two types of rewards: additional OGV tokens distributed on a pre-configured daily schedule, and a share of the fees generated by OUSD and OETH. This aligns incentives between long-term holders, the development team, and everyday users of the protocol.

The longer a user locks up their OGV, the greater their veOGV balance and proportional share of rewards and voting power.

Ecosystem & Use Cases

  • Governance: veOGV holders vote on yield strategies, protocol upgrades, and fee structures for OUSD and OETH.
  • Fee sharing: Stakers earn a share of protocol revenue generated by Origin's DeFi products.
  • Yield-bearing stablecoins: OUSD maintains a 1:1 peg to the US dollar and automatically earns yield in users' wallets. OETH is pegged to Ether and similarly auto-compounds.
  • Migration to OGN: Following the 2024 community vote, OGV can be migrated to OGN, which adopts the same veToken staking mechanics.

Team, Governance & Community

OGV was developed by Origin Protocol, a team of serial entrepreneurs and early employees from major tech companies, including co-founder Josh Fraser. The team is focused on simplifying DeFi and expanding decentralized governance.

Community participation is central — governance votes have included integrating new yield strategies (such as Convex and Curve pools) and the landmark decision to merge OGV into OGN.

Advantages

  • Real yield: Stakers earn genuine protocol revenue, not just inflationary token emissions.
  • Audited contracts: The veOGV smart contracts were independently audited by OpenZeppelin.
  • Gas-efficient design: Exponential decay veToken model significantly reduces on-chain complexity.
  • Direct governance: Community votes have real, on-chain outcomes for protocol strategy.
  • Long-term alignment: Longer staking periods translate to greater rewards and governance power.

Risks & Challenges

  • Token migration: The voted merger with OGN means OGV's standalone governance role is being wound down over time.
  • Smart contract risk: As with all DeFi protocols, bugs or exploits in underlying contracts remain a persistent risk.
  • Stablecoin peg risk: OUSD and OETH depend on external DeFi protocols for yield; strategy failures could affect protocol revenue.
  • Low liquidity: Reduced trading activity following the merger proposal may limit price discovery and exit options.

Long-Term Vision

Origin Protocol's long-term direction points toward a unified token economy under OGN, which will inherit the veToken staking model proven by OGV. The broader goal is to bring OUSD, OETH, and future products under a single, community-governed token, expanding TVL and offering yield-bearing assets across multiple blockchain networks. OGV's design — particularly its veToken governance mechanics — laid the foundation for this consolidated DeFi vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

OGV is the governance and value-accrual token for Origin Dollar (OUSD) and Origin Ether (OETH). Holders stake it to earn protocol fees and gain voting rights over key decisions like yield strategies and protocol upgrades.

veOGV is vote-escrowed OGV received when users stake their OGV tokens. It grants governance power and a share of protocol revenue, with longer staking periods yielding more veOGV and greater rewards.

Unlike Curve's veCRV which uses linear decay, veOGV uses exponential decay. This reduces smart contract complexity, enables vote delegation, and lowers gas costs, though it means voting power does not fully decay to zero after a stake expires.

OGV was built by Origin Protocol, a team of serial entrepreneurs and early tech employees. Co-founder Josh Fraser is among the key figures behind the project.

In April 2024, both OGN and OGV communities voted to merge the two tokens. OGV holders can migrate their tokens to OGN at a fixed exchange rate, with OGN adopting the veToken staking mechanics originally pioneered by OGV.

OGV was distributed via an airdrop to OGN holders on a 1:1 basis, based on a snapshot taken in July 2022. Unclaimed OGV after the claim deadline was burned to reduce supply.

OGV governs the yield strategies and parameters of Origin Dollar (OUSD), a yield-bearing stablecoin, and Origin Ether (OETH), an Ether-pegged yield product. Governance votes have included integrating Convex and Curve DeFi strategies.

Yes. The veOGV smart contracts were independently audited by OpenZeppelin, a leading blockchain security firm. A separate audit was also conducted to cover the OGV and OGN merger contracts.
