Introduction

EMTRG (also written eMTRG) is a wrapped, Ethereum-compatible version of MTRG, the native governance token of the Meter blockchain. It was created by Meter.io to extend the reach of MTRG into the Ethereum ecosystem, letting holders participate in DeFi without leaving their tokens on the Meter mainnet.

Every eMTRG token is backed 1:1 by a corresponding MTRG locked on the Meter mainnet, making it a faithful representation of the underlying governance asset.

History & Background

Meter.io was founded in 2018 with the goal of building high-performance, censorship-resistant blockchain infrastructure. The Meter mainnet launched in 2020, introducing a dual-token system: MTR (a metastable gas token mined via Proof of Work) and MTRG (the governance token secured by Proof of Stake validators).

eMTRG launched in August 2020 to bridge the gap between the Meter mainnet and the broader Ethereum DeFi ecosystem. In May 2021, Meter launched Meter Passport, a multi-chain router that formalised and expanded cross-chain asset transfers.

How Meter Governance mapped by Meter.io Works

The Meter network uses a hybrid consensus design. Proof of Work miners produce the metastable MTR token, while HotStuff BFT-based Proof of Stake validators — chosen based on staked MTRG — approve transactions and manage the ledger.

eMTRG is created through the Meter Passport bridge. When a user transfers MTRG from the Meter mainnet to Ethereum, the bridge locks the native tokens and mints an equivalent amount of eMTRG on Ethereum. The process is reversible: burning eMTRG on Ethereum unlocks MTRG back on the Meter mainnet.

Governance votes on Snapshot aggregate participation from both MTRG and eMTRG holders, so Ethereum-side holders retain full voting influence.

Tokenomics

eMTRG has no independent issuance policy — it derives its supply entirely from MTRG bridged over from the Meter mainnet. The economic design of MTRG itself centres on staking rewards, network security incentives, and on-chain governance. MTRG staking rewards are distributed to validators and delegators who participate in securing the network, with the annual inflation rate adjustable through governance.

Because eMTRG is a 1:1 mapped representation, its value is designed to track MTRG closely. Liquidity incentives, such as rewards for providing eMTRG-ETH liquidity on Uniswap, can also influence demand for the Ethereum-side token.

Ecosystem & Use Cases

eMTRG unlocks several use cases within the Ethereum DeFi ecosystem:

  • Governance: eMTRG holders can vote on Meter network proposals via Snapshot alongside native MTRG holders.
  • Liquidity Mining: Providing eMTRG-ETH liquidity on Uniswap earns staking rewards distributed by the Meter protocol.
  • Cross-Chain Transfers: Via Meter Passport, eMTRG can move between Ethereum and other supported chains such as Moonbeam, Theta, Avalanche, and Binance Smart Chain.
  • DEX Trading: eMTRG is tradeable on decentralised exchanges like Uniswap.

Team, Governance & Community

Meter.io was founded by Xiaohan Zhu and has received backing from institutional investors including Pantera Capital and DTC Capital. The project maintains active developer documentation, a GitHub repository, and community channels on Telegram, Discord, and Twitter.

Governance is conducted off-chain via Snapshot, with votes weighted by combined MTRG and eMTRG holdings, ensuring Ethereum-side holders have an equal voice.

Advantages

  • Interoperability: eMTRG extends MTRG utility to the full Ethereum DeFi landscape without sacrificing governance rights.
  • 1:1 Backing: Every eMTRG is fully backed by locked MTRG, providing transparent collateralisation.
  • Multi-Chain Access: Meter Passport supports numerous blockchains, expanding where eMTRG can be used.
  • Unified Governance: Snapshot aggregates both MTRG and eMTRG votes, keeping the community unified.

Risks & Challenges

  • Bridge Risk: Cross-chain bridges introduce smart contract and relayer risks that native on-chain tokens do not face.
  • Low Liquidity: eMTRG trading volumes on Ethereum are relatively thin, which can lead to price slippage.
  • Dependency on Meter Ecosystem: eMTRG value is tied entirely to the health, adoption, and governance of the underlying Meter network.
  • Smart Contract Exposure: Using eMTRG in DeFi protocols adds additional layers of smart contract risk.

Long-Term Vision

eMTRG is part of Meter.io's broader ambition to build a scalable, interoperable, and censorship-resistant financial infrastructure. By maintaining a seamless bridge between the Meter mainnet and Ethereum, Meter aims to attract developers and liquidity to its ecosystem while allowing governance to remain decentralised across chains. The continued development of Meter Passport — including V2.0 upgrades — signals a long-term commitment to multi-chain accessibility for MTRG holders wherever they choose to operate.

Frequently Asked Questions

MTRG is the native governance token on the Meter mainnet, while eMTRG is its 1:1 ERC-20 representation on Ethereum. Both carry equivalent governance rights and value, but eMTRG can be used directly within the Ethereum DeFi ecosystem.

You can convert MTRG to eMTRG using the Meter Passport cross-chain bridge at passport.meter.io. The bridge locks your native MTRG and mints an equivalent amount of eMTRG on Ethereum.

Yes. Governance votes are conducted on Snapshot and aggregate voting power from both MTRG and eMTRG holders, so Ethereum-side holders retain full participation rights.

eMTRG can be used for governance voting, providing liquidity on DEXs like Uniswap, liquidity mining to earn staking rewards, and trading on decentralised exchanges.

Meter Passport is Meter.io's N-way multi-chain bridge and router that allows MTRG, eMTRG, and other assets to be transferred between Ethereum and other supported blockchains such as Moonbeam, Theta, and Avalanche.

Meter uses a hybrid design: Proof of Work miners produce the metastable MTR gas token, while HotStuff BFT-based Proof of Stake validators — secured by staked MTRG — approve transactions and manage the ledger.

eMTRG is primarily traded on Uniswap V2 on Ethereum. The most active pair is eMTRG/WETH, though overall trading volumes are relatively low.
