What is Wrapped TAO (WTAO)?: Wrapped TAO (WTAO) is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum that represents Bittensor's native TAO token on a 1:1 basis. It allows TAO holders to use their assets within Ethereum's DeFi ecosystem.
Why does TAO need to be wrapped?: Bittensor operates on its own Substrate-based blockchain, which is not compatible with Ethereum smart contracts. Wrapping TAO into WTAO makes it usable on Ethereum-based platforms like Uniswap and Aave.
How is the 1:1 peg maintained?: Every WTAO token in circulation is backed by an equivalent amount of native TAO locked in the bridge's reserve. New WTAO can only be minted when TAO is deposited, and WTAO is burned when users redeem their native TAO back.
Who built and operates the Tao Bridge?: The bridge was built and is operated by a community member known as CreativeBuilts, who is also a Bittensor validator. It is an independent, community-run project not affiliated with the official OpenTensor Foundation.
