What is CounterParty (XCP)?: CounterParty is an open-source protocol built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain that enables users to create, issue, and trade custom digital assets. XCP is its native token, used to pay fees and power smart contract execution within the protocol.
How was XCP created?: XCP was created through a proof-of-burn mechanism where users permanently destroyed Bitcoin by sending it to an unspendable address. This triggered the automatic creation of XCP, with no pre-mine or founding team allocation.
What can you do with XCP?: XCP is used to pay network fees for complex Counterparty transactions, fuel smart contract execution, and participate in governance decisions. It acts as the internal working currency for operations that Bitcoin itself cannot handle.
How does CounterParty differ from Ethereum?: CounterParty runs on top of Bitcoin rather than having its own blockchain, inheriting Bitcoin's security but also its scripting limitations. Ethereum was purpose-built for smart contracts and supports a much larger and more complex developer ecosystem.
