Introduction
Spectra (formerly APWine Finance) is a decentralized interest rate derivatives protocol built on EVM-compatible blockchains. Its goal is to let DeFi users tokenize, trade, and manage the yield generated by their interest-bearing assets — separating principal from future yield in a flexible, permissionless environment.
APW is the original governance token of the Spectra protocol, enabling holders to participate in protocol decisions and earn rewards.
History & Background
The project was founded in August 2020 by Antoine Mouran and Gaspard Peduzzi, based in Paris, France, during the DeFi Summer wave. It originally launched as APWine Finance — a protocol to trade the future yield of interest-bearing tokens.
In March 2021, the project raised $1 million in seed funding led by Delphi Ventures, with backing from The Spartan Group, DeFi Alliance, and notable DeFi figures. A follow-on seed extension of $2.6 million was raised in November 2022 led by Greenfield Capital.
The protocol rebranded from APWine Finance to Spectra Finance in July 2023, and officially launched its permissionless v2 protocol in June 2024.
How Spectra Works
Spectra allows users to deposit Interest Bearing Tokens (IBTs) — such as aUSDC from Aave — into the protocol for a fixed duration. In return, users receive two separate tokens:
- Principal Tokens (PT): Represent the original deposited amount, redeemable at maturity.
- Yield Tokens (YT): Represent the interest that will accrue on the deposit over the fixed period.
This separation enables powerful use cases like fixed-rate lending, yield speculation, and interest rate hedging. The protocol also includes a built-in AMM where users can trade these tokens, and MetaVaults that automate capital reallocation across strategies.
Tokenomics
APW is the original governance token, using a vote-escrowed (veAPW) model. Holders can lock APW for up to two years to receive veAPW, which grants amplified governance rights and a share of protocol rewards.
In December 2024, a governance proposal was approved to migrate APW to a new SPECTRA token at a 1:20 ratio. APW's smart contract is immutable and its issuance has ended, though the token remains on-chain. SPECTRA inherits and extends APW's utility with an updated emissions framework and expanded governance features.

Ecosystem & Use Cases
Spectra integrates natively with leading DeFi protocols including Aave, Compound, and Yearn Finance, supporting any ERC-4626 compatible yield-bearing asset. Users can:
- Lock in fixed interest rates on stablecoins and ETH
- Speculate on future yield movements by trading YTs
- Provide liquidity to earn swap fees in Spectra's AMM pools
- Participate in Gauge voting to direct liquidity incentives
The protocol operates across Ethereum, Polygon, and Base, with MetaVaults providing automated yield strategies across multiple networks from a single deposit.
Team, Governance & Community
Spectra is co-founded by Antoine Mouran and Gaspard Peduzzi and is headquartered in Paris, France. The protocol is governed by APW (and transitioning to SPECTRA) token holders through an on-chain DAO structure.
Governance decisions — including emissions schedules, pool whitelisting, and protocol upgrades — are made via on-chain proposals and Gauge votes, with veAPW/veSPECTRA holders having proportional voting power based on lock duration.
Advantages
- Fixed-rate access: Users can lock in predictable yield on DeFi assets
- Permissionless pools: Anyone can create yield pools for any ERC-4626 compatible token
- Composability: PT and YT tokens integrate across the broader DeFi ecosystem
- ve-tokenomics: Long-term APW lockers earn greater rewards and governance rights
- Automated strategies: MetaVaults handle rollovers and compounding on-chain
Risks & Challenges
- Token migration risk: The shift from APW to SPECTRA introduces uncertainty for existing holders
- Smart contract risk: As with all DeFi protocols, bugs or exploits could affect user funds
- Competition: Pendle Finance is a major competitor with a larger market share in yield tokenization
- APW immutability: The original APW contract cannot be updated or adjusted, limiting flexibility
- Liquidity fragmentation: Operating across multiple chains can spread liquidity thin
Long-Term Vision
Spectra aims to become the foundational yield layer for on-chain finance, natively integrating with lending markets, liquid staking protocols, and stablecoin issuers. By transitioning to the SPECTRA token and expanding its MetaVaults product, the protocol is working toward a future where any user can access sophisticated interest rate strategies with a single deposit — without managing complex positions manually.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is APW?
APW is the original governance token of Spectra Finance, formerly known as APWine Finance. It uses a vote-escrowed model where holders can lock tokens to gain voting rights and earn protocol rewards.
- What is Spectra Finance?
Spectra Finance is a decentralized interest rate derivatives protocol that lets users tokenize and trade the yield generated by DeFi interest-bearing assets. It separates principal and future yield into tradeable tokens.
- What is the difference between APW and SPECTRA?
APW is the original governance token from the APWine era, while SPECTRA is its successor token introduced in late 2024. The migration follows a 1:20 ratio, with SPECTRA featuring an updated tokenomics framework and expanded utility.
- What are Principal Tokens and Yield Tokens?
Principal Tokens (PT) represent your original deposited amount, redeemable at maturity. Yield Tokens (YT) represent the interest that will accrue on your deposit during a fixed period, and can be traded or speculated on.
- How does veAPW work?
veAPW is received when holders lock their APW tokens for up to two years. The longer the lock duration, the more veAPW received, which grants greater governance voting power and a larger share of protocol rewards.
- Who founded Spectra Finance?
Spectra Finance was co-founded by Antoine Mouran and Gaspard Peduzzi, based in Paris, France. The project started in August 2020 during the DeFi Summer period.
- What blockchains does Spectra support?
Spectra operates across Ethereum, Polygon, and Base networks. Its MetaVaults feature allows users to access yield strategies across multiple networks from a single vault deposit.
- How does Spectra compare to Pendle Finance?
Both protocols offer yield tokenization and interest rate derivatives in DeFi. Pendle has a larger market presence, while Spectra differentiates through its permissionless pool creation, MetaVaults automation, and deep integration with stablecoin and ETH yield assets.
