What Are Optimism Ecosystem Coins?

Optimism ecosystem coins are the coins and tokens that run on OP Mainnet, the layer 2 network often just called Optimism. This list ranks them by market cap, with live prices. It includes the OP token, tokens built on Optimism, and many tokens bridged from Ethereum, such as USDC, WBTC and LINK.

How Optimism Works

Optimism runs transactions off the Ethereum main chain and posts them back to Ethereum in batches. This makes fees much lower than on Ethereum itself. It is called optimistic because transactions are assumed valid unless someone proves fraud during a challenge window. Optimism is built with the OP Stack, open software that other chains like Base also use.

Types of Tokens on Optimism

  • Governance token: OP, used to vote on upgrades and funding.
  • Stablecoins: Tokens like USDT, USDC, DAI and USDe that track the US dollar.
  • DeFi tokens: Tokens of apps like Velodrome, Aave and Uniswap.
  • Bridged and wrapped tokens: Tokens like WETH, WBTC, wstETH and LINK are bridged from Ethereum. They appear on this list because they exist on Optimism too.
  • Other tokens: Project tokens like Worldcoin (WLD), plus meme coins.

How to Buy Optimism Tokens

  1. Use an Ethereum wallet like MetaMask and select the OP Mainnet network.
  2. Get ETH on OP Mainnet to pay gas, either by withdrawing from an exchange that supports it or by using a bridge.
  3. Swap ETH for other tokens on a decentralized exchange on Optimism.
  4. Check the token contract address, because addresses on Optimism differ from those on Ethereum.

Risks

Optimism relies on Ethereum for security, but its own software can still have bugs. Withdrawals back to Ethereum through the official bridge take several days. Bridged tokens depend on the bridge that created them. Small tokens can have low liquidity and high price swings.
