Introduction

VitaDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) built around one ambitious goal: accelerating longevity science. It pools community capital and uses blockchain-native tools to fund early-stage research aimed at extending healthy human lifespan.

At the heart of the project is VITA, the governance token that gives holders a direct voice in how the DAO operates and which research projects receive funding.

History & Background

VitaDAO launched in 2021 as a fully decentralized, community-led organization with no CEO or board of directors. It emerged from a growing movement in DeSci — decentralized science — which seeks to reform how research is funded and owned.

From early on, the project attracted a diverse mix of stakeholders, including academic scientists, longevity researchers, and major institutions such as Pfizer, as well as prominent crypto figures.

How VitaDAO Works

VitaDAO addresses two major problems in early-stage biopharma: funding gaps for high-risk research, and the illiquidity of intellectual property. It solves these using two core mechanisms.

First, VITA token holders vote on research proposals, deciding which projects get funded and how the treasury is managed. Voting power is proportional to tokens held, and all votes are cast gaslessly via Snapshot.

Second, IP-NFTs (Intellectual Property NFTs) convert research IP into on-chain assets. These are verifiable, tradeable, and governed by the DAO — allowing the community to hold and potentially license valuable scientific discoveries.

Tokenomics

VITA is designed primarily as a governance token. Holders use it to vote on funding proposals, treasury decisions, and broader DAO strategy. The token's supply is capped — uniquely, the cap reflects the number of minutes lived by Jeanne Calment, the longest-lived person in recorded history.

Revenue generated from IP licensing can be reinvested into new research, creating a sustainable funding loop that benefits all VITA holders.

Ecosystem & Use Cases

Beyond governance, VitaDAO has pioneered project-specific tokens — such as VITA-FAST — that let community members directly govern individual research programs, including decisions on IP licensing and experiment priorities.

The DAO also runs a Longevity Fellowship to nurture emerging talent in aging science, and maintains working groups focused on deal flow, community, and coordination.

Team, Governance & Community

VitaDAO has no traditional leadership hierarchy. Governance is fully community-driven, supported by a Scientific Advisory Board of longevity experts who assess proposals for scientific rigor and potential impact.

The DAO has grown to over 10,000 members and has funded more than 24 research projects. Strategic partners include Molecule AG, Pfizer, Shine Capital, and PrimeDAO.

Advantages

  • Open access to funding: Researchers bypass traditional gatekeepers and apply directly to a global community
  • IP ownership: IP-NFTs give the DAO verifiable, tradeable rights to funded research
  • Transparent governance: All votes are on-chain and publicly auditable
  • Diverse community: Scientists, investors, and crypto participants collaborate under one roof
  • Sustainable loop: Licensing revenue can fund future longevity projects

Risks & Challenges

  • Scientific uncertainty: Early-stage longevity research carries inherently high failure rates
  • Regulatory risk: Tokenized IP and decentralized drug development occupy evolving legal territory
  • Governance concentration: Voting power scales with token holdings, which may favor large holders
  • Liquidity risk: IP-NFTs are novel instruments and may be difficult to value or trade

Long-Term Vision

VitaDAO envisions a world where anyone, anywhere, can contribute to — and benefit from — advances in longevity science. By making research funding open, transparent, and community-owned, it aims to close the notorious 'Valley of Death' in biopharma and bring life-extending therapies to market faster.

As the DeSci movement matures, VitaDAO positions itself as a foundational model for how blockchain can meaningfully transform scientific research and ownership.

Frequently Asked Questions

VitaDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that funds and governs longevity research using blockchain technology. It was founded in 2021 and operates without a traditional CEO or board of directors.

VITA is VitaDAO's governance token. Holders use it to vote on research funding proposals, treasury management, and other key decisions within the DAO.

IP-NFTs are NFTs that represent intellectual property rights from research projects funded by VitaDAO. They make research IP verifiable, tradeable, and governable on-chain.

Community members submit research proposals, and VITA token holders vote on which projects receive funding from the DAO treasury. Revenue from IP licensing can be reinvested into future projects.

Anyone holding VITA tokens can participate, including academic scientists, longevity researchers, and crypto investors. A Scientific Advisory Board also reviews proposals for scientific merit.

VITA-FAST tokens are project-specific tokens that let holders govern a single research program, such as making decisions on IP licensing and experiment priorities for autophagy research at the Korolchuk Lab.

VitaDAO has formed partnerships with institutions and companies including Pfizer, Molecule AG, Shine Capital, and PrimeDAO, though it remains a decentralized, community-governed organization.

The VITA token is deployed on Ethereum and Base. Governance voting takes place via Snapshot in a gasless format, requiring an Ethereum wallet to participate.
