Introduction

Aavegotchi is a DeFi-powered NFT gaming ecosystem where players collect, train, and battle pixelated ghost avatars called Aavegotchis. The project uniquely merges decentralized finance mechanics with blockchain gaming, giving every in-game asset real economic weight.

GHST is the heartbeat of this ecosystem — used for governance voting, purchasing in-game items, and trading NFTs on the native marketplace.

History & Background

Aavegotchi was created by Pixelcraft Studios, a Singapore-based team with roots in both the NFT and DeFi spaces. The project officially launched in September 2020 with a novel bonding curve token sale backed by DAI.

In 2021, high Ethereum gas fees prompted a move to Polygon for smoother gameplay. The ecosystem continued to grow, and in 2024 the project migrated its canonical home to Base, a layer-2 network built on Ethereum by Coinbase.

In 2023, the AavegotchiDAO voted to close the original bonding curve, transitioning GHST to a free-floating token with a fixed supply.

How Aavegotchi Works

Each Aavegotchi avatar is an ERC-721 NFT that acts as an escrow account for staked Aave-based aTokens (called Spirit Force). The more aTokens staked, the higher the avatar's rarity score — and the greater its yield from Aave's lending protocol.

Players obtain Aavegotchis by purchasing a Portal using GHST. A Portal contains ten potential Aavegotchis, from which the buyer selects one to summon. Avatars can be further upgraded with wearables and in-game consumables.

The Gotchiverse is the virtual world where players own REALM land parcels, craft installations using in-game resource tokens (FUD, FOMO, ALPHA, KEK), and engage in play-to-earn mechanics.

Tokenomics

GHST serves a dual utility — governance and in-game currency. Holding GHST grants voting rights in AavegotchiDAO, allowing token holders to shape protocol decisions, game features, and fund allocations.

Initial token distribution included allocations for private sale, pre-sale, ecosystem fund, and team fund. A burn mechanism is built in through various ecosystem interactions, making the token gradually deflationary over time.

Ecosystem & Use Cases

  • Portals: Purchase packs to summon new Aavegotchi NFTs
  • Wearables & Consumables: Equip and upgrade avatars using GHST
  • Baazaar Marketplace: Trade Aavegotchi NFTs with GHST as the base currency
  • REALM Parcels: Own virtual land in the Gotchiverse
  • Rarity Farming: Earn rewards based on the rarity score of your Aavegotchi

Team, Governance & Community

Pixelcraft Studios leads core development, but AavegotchiDAO holds meaningful authority over the protocol. Any GHST holder can vote on Aavegotchi Improvement Proposals (AGIPs) that govern everything from game mechanics to treasury spending.

The community is active across Discord, Telegram, and Twitter, and has a strong culture of participatory governance.

Advantages

  • DeFi integration: Avatars generate real yield through staked aTokens
  • Community ownership: Fully on-chain DAO governs key decisions
  • Multi-chain presence: Available on Ethereum, Polygon, and Base
  • Rich game economy: Multiple in-game assets and resource tokens
  • Established history: Launched in 2020 with a proven track record

Risks & Challenges

  • Market dependency: Token value tied closely to NFT and gaming market sentiment
  • Complexity: Combining DeFi and gaming creates a steep onboarding curve
  • Smart contract risk: Multiple interacting contracts increase potential attack surface
  • Competition: The blockchain gaming space is rapidly evolving with many rivals

Long-Term Vision

Aavegotchi aims to be a fully community-owned, self-sustaining gaming universe where DeFi and NFTs reinforce each other. With the migration to Base and continued DAO-driven development, the project is focused on expanding the Gotchiverse, onboarding new players, and deepening the integration between decentralized finance and interactive gaming.

Frequently Asked Questions

GHST is the eco-governance and utility token of the Aavegotchi ecosystem. It is used to purchase Portals, wearables, consumables, and REALM land parcels, and grants voting rights in AavegotchiDAO.

An Aavegotchi is a pixelated ghost NFT (ERC-721) that acts as an escrow account for Aave-backed aTokens. The staked aTokens, known as Spirit Force, determine the avatar's rarity and generate yield via Aave's lending protocol.

Aavegotchi was created by Pixelcraft Studios, a Singapore-based development team with backgrounds in DeFi and NFTs. The project launched in September 2020.

AavegotchiDAO is the on-chain governance system for the Aavegotchi protocol. Every GHST token grants one vote, allowing holders to submit and vote on Aavegotchi Improvement Proposals (AGIPs) that govern the game and treasury.

A Portal is an item purchased with GHST that contains ten potential Aavegotchi avatars. The buyer can inspect all ten and choose exactly one to summon into the game as their NFT.

GHST was originally sold via a bonding curve backed by DAI. In 2023, AavegotchiDAO voted to close the curve, transitioning GHST to a free-floating token with a fixed supply.

Aavegotchi's canonical home has migrated to Base, a layer-2 network by Coinbase. GHST also exists on Ethereum and Polygon, and the project initially ran on Ethereum before moving to Polygon for lower fees.

Rarity farming is a play-to-earn mechanic where players earn GHST rewards based on the rarity score of their Aavegotchi avatars. Rarity can be improved by staking more aTokens or equipping better wearables.
