How the BRC-20 Token Standard Works

BRC-20 does not use smart contracts like Ethereum's ERC-20 standard. Instead, it uses Ordinals inscriptions. An inscription is a small piece of data written onto a satoshi, the smallest unit of a bitcoin. For BRC-20, the data is a short JSON text with an instruction. There are three main actions:

  • Deploy: Create a new token and set its ticker, maximum supply and mint limit.
  • Mint: Create new tokens up to the set limit.
  • Transfer: Send tokens from one holder to another.

Bitcoin itself does not read these instructions. Off-chain indexers read the inscriptions in order and track who owns which tokens. Wallets and marketplaces rely on these indexers to show balances.

BRC-20 vs ERC-20

ERC-20 tokens live on Ethereum and are managed by smart contracts. BRC-20 tokens live on Bitcoin and are tracked by indexers that read inscriptions. BRC-20 transfers are often slower and can cost more, because each action needs its own Bitcoin transaction. Many BRC-20 tokens started as experiments or meme coins.

How to Buy BRC-20 Tokens

You can buy some BRC-20 tokens on centralized exchanges. You can also trade them on Ordinals marketplaces with a wallet that supports Ordinals and BRC-20. A normal Bitcoin wallet may not show BRC-20 balances and could send the inscribed satoshis by mistake.

Risks

Most BRC-20 tokens are speculative and have no product behind them. Fees rise when the Bitcoin network is busy. Because the standard depends on indexers, wallets and apps can show different balances if they disagree. Use only wallets made for Ordinals.
