Introduction

Ondo Finance is a real-world asset (RWA) tokenization protocol that bridges traditional financial markets and decentralized finance. Its mission is to accelerate an open financial economy by building platforms and infrastructure that bring institutional-grade assets on-chain.

The ONDO token is the protocol's native governance token, giving holders the ability to participate in decision-making across the Ondo DAO and its associated lending market, Flux Finance.

History & Background

Ondo Finance was founded in 2021 by former Goldman Sachs professionals. The project completed a $4 million seed round led by Pantera Capital in 2021, followed by a $20 million Series A in 2022. The ONDO token was first sold on CoinList in 2022 and launched publicly for broad trading in early 2024, following a DAO proposal that lifted an initial token lock-up.

From a niche RWA issuer, Ondo grew into one of the largest on-chain Treasury and tokenized-markets platforms, receiving MiCA regulatory approval in 2025 to passport tokenized stocks across 30 European countries.

How ONDO Works

Ondo operates through two core pillars. The Asset Management arm creates and manages tokenized financial products, while the Technology division builds the underlying protocols and settlement infrastructure.

Products like OUSG are structured using offshore SPVs, regulated broker-dealers, and legal wrappers to ensure compliance with securities law. When users deposit stablecoins, Ondo converts them into fiat, purchases the underlying assets through qualified custodians, and issues corresponding on-chain tokens. Yields are automatically compounded by reinvesting income back into the underlying assets.

Tokenomics

ONDO is an ERC-20 token with a fixed cap and no scheduled inflation. Allocations span Ecosystem Growth, Protocol Development, Private Sales, and a Community Access Sale, each released on structured vesting schedules using a cliff mechanism. Tokens that remain locked during vesting are still eligible for DAO governance voting, ensuring all stakeholders can participate in shaping the protocol.

Ecosystem & Use Cases

  • OUSG — an institutional-grade tokenized U.S. Treasury product backed by BlackRock's BUIDL fund, restricted to accredited and qualified investors.
  • USDY — a permissionless, yield-bearing dollar token backed by short-term Treasuries, targeting non-U.S. offshore users.
  • Ondo Global Markets — tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs, with reportedly dominant market share in the tokenized-equity segment.
  • Flux Finance — a DeFi lending protocol supporting tokenized securities as collateral.
  • Ondo Nexus — infrastructure improving liquidity and third-party issuance.

Team, Governance & Community

Ondo's founding team comes from Goldman Sachs, bringing deep traditional finance expertise to the protocol. Governance is executed through the Ondo DAO, where ONDO token holders vote on protocol upgrades, parameter changes, and strategic decisions. Partnerships with institutions managing over $1 trillion in assets, such as Franklin Templeton and Wellington Management, reflect the team's institutional reach. Ondo also became the first RWA provider to join Mastercard's Multi-Token Network in 2025.

Advantages

  • Compliance-first design using regulated custodians, SPVs, and legal wrappers
  • Institutional partnerships with BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and Mastercard
  • Broad product stack covering Treasuries, equities, lending, and settlement infrastructure
  • Multi-chain reach across Ethereum, Solana, and other major networks
  • Governance participation even for locked token holders during vesting

Risks & Challenges

  • Regulatory exposure — operating at the intersection of securities law and DeFi creates ongoing compliance risk
  • Access restrictions — key products like OUSG are limited to accredited investors, narrowing the user base
  • Token value capture — the ONDO token's direct economic link to protocol revenue remains limited
  • Sector competition — rivals including BlackRock BUIDL, Securitize, Centrifuge, and Midas operate in the same RWA space
  • Vesting overhang — large future token unlocks scheduled through 2029 may create sell pressure

Long-Term Vision

Ondo Finance aims to become the core financial infrastructure for on-chain capital markets. The protocol is pushing beyond Treasuries into tokenized equities, IPO access, and derivatives through Ondo Global Markets. With its own purpose-built Ondo Chain in development to support compliant lending and settlement, the project envisions a future where traditional and decentralized finance converge seamlessly on public blockchains.

Frequently Asked Questions

ONDO is the governance token of the Ondo DAO and Flux Finance. Holders use it to vote on protocol upgrades, parameter changes, and other key decisions affecting the ecosystem.

Ondo Finance was founded in 2021 by former Goldman Sachs professionals. The team has a strong background in traditional institutional finance, which underpins the protocol's compliance-first approach.

OUSG is Ondo's institutional-grade tokenized U.S. Treasury product, backed by BlackRock's BUIDL fund. It is available exclusively to accredited and qualified investors and delivers yield from short-term government securities.

USDY is a permissionless, yield-bearing dollar token backed by short-term U.S. Treasuries and bank deposits. It is designed for non-U.S. offshore users and offers a yield-generating alternative to standard stablecoins.

The ONDO governance token is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. However, Ondo's products like USDY and OUSG have been expanded across multiple blockchains including Solana and others to improve accessibility.

Flux Finance is a DeFi lending protocol governed by the Ondo DAO. It allows tokenized securities, such as OUSG, to be used as collateral for on-chain borrowing and lending.

Ondo Global Markets is Ondo's platform for tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs. It reportedly holds a dominant share of the tokenized-equity market segment, enabling 24/7 on-chain trading of traditional equities.

Key risks include regulatory uncertainty around tokenized securities, access restrictions limiting core products to accredited investors, future token unlock events through 2029, and intense competition from other RWA platforms. The ONDO token also has a limited direct economic link to protocol revenues.
