CryptoKitties is the world’s first blockchain game and proved the value of non-fungible tokens, becoming the key step to making blockchain more accessible. This virtual game allows players to adopt, breed, and trade virtual kitties. Each cat is unique and the one you own is actually 100% yours, secured on the blockchain. And because it’s stored on the blockchain, you can take it with you into other experiences and games, created by blockchain game developers.
CryptoKitties was created in December 2017 by Axiom Zen, a blockchain company based in Vancouver. The Kitties run via a set of smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain; ERC-721. This is a free, open standard that describes how to build non-fungible tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. The tokens can be bought with Ether, the cryptocurrency that is used on Ethereum and necessary to fuel CryptoKittie transactions, which include purchasing and breeding them. To get started, a Chrome extension like Dapper or MetaMask must be installed, which acts as a digital wallet and lets users send and receive Ether from their computers.
