What is Hedera

HBAR is the native token of the blockchain-alternative network, Hedera Hashgraph.

The Hedera Hashgraph is a public, open source network that uses the proof-of-stake consensus mechanism.

However, Hedera is not a blockchain. Instead, it's a decentralized public ledger. The concept of Hedera is slightly different to the blockchain as it is based on a technology known as the DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph)

HBAR is used to pay transaction fees and defend the network from malicious attacks through the proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. HBAR is also used as network fuel where developers use it as currency for payments involving transferring HBARS, minting fungible and non-fungible tokens, logging data and calling smart contracts.

Every transaction that is submitted to the Hedera network requires the HBARS tokens as payments for fees. The fees are used to compensate validator nodes for storage, bandwidth and compute.

HBARs are also staked for weighted voting that is used to validate transactions. This prevents bad actors from attacking the system as they would need over one third of the HBAR tokens staked to disrupt the consensus.

The maximum supply of HBAR is 50 billion tokens. HBAR was launched in 2018 by Swirld. Its highest price was $0.569229 on Sep 15, 2021.

How is HBAR’s Price Calculated?

HBAR token price is affected mainly by the supply and demand of the token. The network use will determine the demand for the token.

The expectation is that when the network, Hedera gains more real-life utility, the token demand will also increase. In comparison to it’s scarce and limited supply, the price should increase.

On the flip side, if the network loses utility, the token will lose demand and this will affect the price as well.

Other factors that may affect the price of HBAR include:

- Market factors

- News factors

- Economic developments

- General state of the economy

- Announcements on the Hedera Hashgraph and Swirld

What Influences HBAR’s Price?

HBAR is a relatively new token that has not been around long like Ethereum or Bitcoin. Their technology is also quite different to the blockchains we are often used to.

Thus, it will take time for people to get accustomed to understanding the new technology as it is an entry-level project.

There are also some arguments against the Hedera network such as it being more centralized than blockchain due to its no-fork policy and it being governed by a 39-member council.

Despite the negatives, there are also some good aspects to the network. This includes its fast transactions and lower fees. The network is also significantly more eco-friendly than proof-of-work coins like Bitcoin. This makes it ideal for institutions and enterprises that value carbon efficiency.

The best part about Hedera is that it is backed by global partners like  LG, University College London, Standard Bank and even Google. That also takes part in governance.  Thus, it is expected that as more well-known partners join the network, the network will gain traction by being reputable. Demand for the HBAR token will only increase when the network gains more users as the HBAR token is used for transactions within the network. Hedera is also prone to price fluctuations resulting from bear and bull markets. It follows the general trend of cryptocurrency boom and bust cycles.

Thus, prices can be quite volatile and unpredictable. The best way to stay updated is to read the cryptocurrency news and monitor prices on reputable websites or exchanges.

HBAR’s Price In The Future

Future prices are hard to predict however it is expected that with the increase in adoption of the network use. Prices could also increase when the cryptocurrency market recovers or with the joining of more reputable partners as a council member for the network’s governance.
